Located north of Gisborne on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island, Tokomaru Bay is a secluded gem. It’s renowned for its natural beauty, rich Māori heritage, and laid-back coastal lifestyle. What an amazing place to live for the owner operators of the local Four Square supermarket, Mike and Chelsea, and their two year old son.
Four Square is one of New Zealand’s oldest brands, having been in business for 101 years, and is being revamped to ensure it continues to meet the needs and expectations of its customers. This includes ensuring a modern and convenient shopping experience, with a focus on fresh produce, ready-to-eat offerings and beverages, while introducing additional payment and technology options.
Earlier this year, FPG Sales Director, Paul Campbell, had the pleasure of working with Mike and Chelsea on a fitout for the front part of their supermarket. The couple had already implemented many of the Four Square fresh offerings such as expanded grocery range, baking fresh bread onsite, and a larger meat display. As part of their continued drive to improve, their team had suggested that the front of the store was their next top priority.
The project with FPG would focus on the fresh food line up and bakery, coffee, and Lotto. For the staff there would be a new storage area and sink.
Mike said he was very impressed with Paul. “He came up, took all the measurements required and suggested some great ideas. Within a week we received the concept. We only made a few small tweaks, and the design was sorted.”
Mike observed that FPG made it easy. “It was a great solution and within our budget.”
The FPG team manufactured and installed the fitout including new FPG Encore Counter refrigerated and heated cabinets. Shutterwall planks provided the finishing touch to all joinery including along the POS counter which also incorporated magazine pockets.
Thanks to Paul’s precise measuring skills, the installation was a perfect fit.

Mike and Chelsea were delighted with the community’s reaction. “There has been a perception shift about the store,” Mike says. “People come in and say WOW. They are super proud of their supermarket.” Mike has no hesitation in sharing his experience and results with other Four Square store owners.
