At FPG we love the opportunity to get creative on projects of all shapes and sizes and the Lost Stag Brew Box provided one such opportunity. A project near to our hearts, the Lost Stag Brew Box is located in our own back yard at the Mitre 10 Sports Park in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.

The owners are New Zealand Black Caps cricketer Blair Tickner and his partner Sarah Reid. They already manage a café at the Sports Park – 13th Stag. The café has a fully operational kitchen that provides athletes and supporters with delicious, healthy sit-down menu options, and a full cabinet of food for customers seeking a takeaway alternative. FPG were involved in the original fitout of the Café in 2019.

Blair is not only a great cricketer, he’s also a food service entrepreneur. He had plenty of experience working as a Barista in his off seasons, so understands the importance of making outstanding coffee to suit individual customers. Being located at the Sports Park he developed an idea for a mobile coffee station which could be relocated to service areas when they were busy – including the water polo pool facilities and the PAK’nSAVE Hastings Netball Centre – the home of Hawke’s Bay Netball. The Netball Centre alone has 18 courts and hosts 80,000 netballers and spectators each year including 3,000 every week during a normal winter season. What an opportunity!

Blair and Sarah discussed the project with Paul Campbell, FPG Sales Director. The brief for the coffee station included:

  • It needed to be self-contained with compact dimensions to enable it to be relocatable
  • Spatial design to accommodate all the functional aspects including coffee machine, fridges, storage and POS
  • Overall design and construction using materials and finishes to continue the strong 13th Stag café branding elements.

In line with the team’s preference, FPG executed a container concept. “A container was sourced and re-worked to include side canopies which provide shelter during wet weather, and close down providing security when the coffee station is closed,” says Paul. “Sometimes it is the little things behind the scenes that can contribute to a happy outcome. For the Lost Stag Brew Box, we implemented a solution to remove waste by accommodating a container on a trolley that staff could easily move to empty. A small thing yet really important for this project.”

FPG built the coffee station at its premises in Napier, then utilised a hiab transporter to deliver and install it at the Sports Park.

One of FPG’s attributes is our flexibility. Paul notes, “On this project we worked with a variety of partners to deliver the solution – from the supplier of the container, to the company which applied the logos, to the company which implemented the plumbing. We are very happy to work with other parties to implement a successful solution.”

And what do Blair and Sarah think? “We loved working alongside the guys from FPG for the Lost Stag Brew Box and the 13th Stag cafe. On both occasions the build has been on schedule and fitted the brief perfectly. We have an ongoing relationship with FPG and will definitely use them with future projects.”
